Get Moving Outside This Winter

Get Moving Outside This Winter

Spending time in nature is essential for our mental and physical health.

Getting outside in the winter months is especially important. The air is fresh and crisp, and provides a nice break from spending more time indoors. When sunshine is scarce our bodies absorb less natural vitamin D. By engaging in physical activity, or a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, we can significantly improve our well-being.

Here are some ideas to get moving outside this winter (with your family or solo) :

  • Layer up and take a walk around the block or a local park!
  • Hit the slopes - take the family skiing, snowboarding, or sledding.
  • Ice skate at The Landing outdoor rink in Bettendorf.
  • Go on a snowshoeing adventure with Scott County Conservation. Or try cross-country skiing. You can rent skis, boots and poles at Palmer Hills Golf Course.
  • Go on a family nature scavenger hunt in your neighborhood and/or backyard.
  • Wear bright colors, lace-up, and go for a run.
  • Build a snowman and/or have a snowball fight.

No matter which option you choose, we encourage you to embrace the great outdoors! Studies found that just 30 minutes in nature can lower cortisol levels and enhance overall mood.
