Most of you know me or have met me at a class but not everyone knows my story as how I came to own FIT4MOM Quad Cities and/or my WHY! So, I thought I would share it all with you on this little blog for my 3rd Anniversary as owner of FIT4MOM Quad Cities.
My FIT4MOM story started in my 2011 marathon training group with cornbelt running club, I saw a car sticker "stroller strides" and didn't really know what it was but it was always in the back of my mind. Fast forward to May 2012 after my daughter was born and a fellow runner friend and I decided to try a class together, when Stella was around 8 weeks old. I was working as a physical therapist until her birth and went to PRN status after she was born. I knew I needed something to get me out of the house so I tried Stroller Strides. I joined to come once a week, on Fridays. Stella slept late, I worked some and I enjoyed other forms of exercise like tennis and volleyball and running too! I didn't attend playgroups much or moms nights. I still liked my workouts on Fridays and the group of Moms and eventually started coming to some evening classes as well!
In early 2014 I inquired about becoming an instructor for the evening class and the owner at the time told me that after 6 years she wasn't going to renew her franchise in July so she didn't want me going through the trouble of getting trained.
Between having Stella and this time I had dealt with two miscarriages and was sort of in a wallow emotionally. The fact that Stroller Strides wasn't going to be around anymore made me sad, even though I was just a 'casual' member. It got my wheels turning about how much I didn't want it to go away. I asked what it would entail to buy it and ownership was transferred to me on July 1, 2014. At that time I was actually in my first trimester with my now son, Samuel, and terrified of losing another baby. I was so glad to have something else, like a new business adventure, to focus on!
My second pregnancy was physically painful, with lots of early contractions and eventual bedrest at 32 weeks. For someone so active this was super hard but I was so thankful for my team, Sarah and Monica, who held things together when I couldn't!
Now that my youngest is 2.5 infancy is a slowly fading but I still remember a few things...like coming to teach a class 5 weeks post-partum (not exercising, don't worry!) and sobbing to my clients afterwards. Because, let's face it, motherhood isn't easy or glamorous. I was so thankful for them at this moment and it is always going to be one of those moments I remember.
I am thankful that I have scheduled mom's nights away from home and friends for my kids and friendships that I have made that I will always cherish.
As Moms we need to remember that whatever you are going through you are not alone, I will always be an ear for you and you are welcome AS YOU ARE in our classes. New mom, veteran mom, exercise, non exercise, breast feeder, bottle feeder....
My WHY now for being an owner is for myself, I like having things to do and have an identity outside of being Mom. I like that I can use my knowledge of health and exercise and still have flexibility outside of the hospital setting. My WHY is for our community. No mom should go through motherhood alone. My why is for the well being of Moms as all moms should have a way to take care of themselves and their children.
